Liberating yourself from perfectionism and discovering the true joy…

Perfect relationships are only seen in fairy tales or movies. In real life, relationships are nothing less than a roller coaster ride.

Every relationship is a complete package of love, trust, understanding, high expectations, and conflicts.

When expectations are not met, it leads to friction. Setting expectations is not a bad idea. However, setting unrealistic expectations from each other and arguing over and over leads to drift.

Accepting each other the way they are, making some adjustments, and understanding that no one is flawless can revive the relationship.

When we are in love, the initial spark doesn’t let us pay attention to the flaws of our partner, but as time passes, no matter how compatible we are, there is at least one thing or sometimes several things that annoy us.

The relationship continues. The couple may remain in love, but their desire to change each other becomes a source of perennial conflict.

To be honest, when we keep arguing and fighting over the issues, we can’t change, we only end up messing our relationship and most importantly our mental peace. Daily conflicts may lead to:

  • Resentment
  • Decreased intimacy
  • Low self-esteem
  • Communication Breakdown
  • Strained Relationships

The best way to have harmony in your relationship is to accept it and embrace it.

Here are some ways to embrace those imperfections:

1. Respect your partner: Treat them with love and care. Respect them as an individual who is equal. Love them the way you want to be loved.

2. Acknowledge their opinions: Accept someone for who they are. They may have a difference in opinion. Hear them and accept their view.

3. Communicate: Avoid indirect, blame-laden comments such as ‘why do you insist on throwing wet towels on the bed?’

4. Request to change: Instead of criticising or arguing over and over the same issue, you can request them to change if possible.

5. See the positives: Every coin has two sides. You need to recognise that we all have little quirks that can be annoying. But don’t lose sight of the big picture and why you are together in the first place.

6. Embrace them: When it comes to flaws, we need to decide whether to change them or embrace them. Sometimes we get frustrated by things that cannot be changed at all. Like a few age-old habits that are now subconsciously programmed into us.

7. Seek Help: If you still feel you can’t handle the imperfections, and the friction is making the relationship worse, seek help. Couple’s therapy might help bring the spark back in your relationship.
